Born in the small village of Evanton, a community nestled in the scenic Highlands of Scotland, my earliest recollections are those of creating - drawing, painting and sculpting all manner of seascapes, landscapes, wildlife, fauna; actually anything or anyone I encountered. I can't remember a time when I didn't have a pencil in my hand. I've always been a perpetual doodler and I continue to draw or paint on anything, with any medium. Actually, when I was young, nothing was safe – including my bedroom walls. Some say that I was destined to be a "muralist" from a very early age.

My family immigrated to Ottawa, Canada in 1977 and I now make my home in Wolf Lake, Quebec, in the Gatineau Hills just North of Ottawa. I find great inspiration everywhere in nature, particularly near rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Although I have drawn and painted since childhood, I started painting professionally 17 years ago. The body of work that I produced during these years was a reflection of my life experiences and my surroundings. As part of my varied and ongoing artistic endeavours (portraits, wildlife, landscapes, seascapes, fantasy and celtic art, pet portraits, wall murals), an aviation theme also began to emerge.

In 1991, I was commissioned by the Ottawa Airshow Committee to do a commemorative piece highlighting the 20th anniversary of the Snowbirds, Canada's military aerobatic display team. The result was "Snowbirds in Formation", a graphite rendering published as a restricted edition of 30 signed/numbered prints and presented to various dignitaries including then Governor General of Canada, Ray Hnatyshyn.

My artwork was also featured on the cover of the spring 2000 issue of "Airforce" magazine, the magazine of Canada's Air Force Heritage. Commissioned as a salute to Canadian airwomen from WWII to the present, this piece is entitled "Beyond the Cockpit". It is intended as a tribute to the innumerable accomplishments of each and every airwoman.

More recently, a feature piece on my artwork and a television interview with Joel Haslam of "Regional Contact" was filmed for CJOH TV (Ottawa, Ontario). The show aired on February 26th, 2005.

I am presently illustrating a book of songs by Penny Lang, Montreal born stage legend. My artwork will be used throughout the book to offer glimpses into the life and passions of this prolific singer/songwriter. I will be including caricatures, line drawings and photo-realistic portraits of the musician and her surroundings.

I've always been interested in portraying people who have overcome adversity and gone on to accomplish great things. I'm both intrigued and inspired by what drives people to do what they do. I also enjoy painting subjects that bring a sense of order and balance - that sense that everything is all right (memories of simple pleasures shared, the love of life and nature). Yet in the search for "balance", I'm often drawn to things that seem to be completely opposite e.g. living in the solitude of a country setting, surrounded by beauty and yet struggling with feelings of isolation.

In addition to the songbook, I am working on several other privately commissioned pieces. As well, I continue to create many original works and limited edition prints which are available for purchase. Due to the intense nature of photo - realism, and in order to keep my creative process fresh, it is not unusual that I have several works in progress in my studio (at varying stages of completion).

Some critics say that if you're going to paint in the style of realism, you might as well take a photo! But as both a photographer and an artist, I feel that brushstrokes of paint can do what the camera cannot…extend the soul of the artist. Time and again someone will look at my artwork and be inspired to tell me a personal story. My painting has triggered an emotion in them (although not necessarily the same emotion I had when I painted it). That has set a mood, connecting the viewer to the subject. To me, that's a successful painting and a memorable human interaction. For every difference that makes us unique, there are common threads that connect us all.

Collectors of my art acknowledge and appreciate the time I've spent researching and rendering various subjects in realistic yet original ways. Consequently, with thanks and gratitude to this growing list of interested people, my artwork is represented in private collections throughout Canada, USA, Australia, the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe.

May my heart, eyes, mind, and spirit always remain open!

By the ocean...my favourite place!
